Helping Your Dog Beat the Heat

Summer is here, and the temperatures are rising. While dogs love playing in the sun, the heat can be dangerous for them. Here, an East Dallas, TX vet offers tips on keeping Fido cool this summer.

First things first. Make sure Fido always has fresh water and access to a cool, shady area. When it’s really hot out, limit your pet’s outdoor time in the middle of the day. Save those walks and play sessions for morning and evening, when it’s cooler.

Paw Care

Dogs can get painful blisters by walking or running on hot ground. Keep Fido on soft grass as much as possible, and use paw balm to protect his furry feet.

Frozen Treats

Ice cream is a classic summer treat. To make Fido a pet-safe version of this cold snack, start by mixing plain yogurt with pureed pumpkin, natural peanut butter, or ripe bananas. You can add kibble; shredded cheese; cooked, boneless meat; bacon bits; or pet-safe fruits and veggies to customize your furry pal’s treat. Just be sure to only use safe, suitable foods. Ask your vet for more information.

Some of our canine buddies absolutely love swimming. If you have a furry, four-legged duck on your hands, feel free to indulge him with a trip to your favorite swimming hole. Just be sure to put your pup’s safety first. Never leave your dog unattended by water. Also, avoid taking your pooch to areas with heavy wakes or strong currents.

Kiddie Pool

Man’s best Friend often loves to splash around in a kiddie pool on a hot day. Fido may also enjoy playing in the spray from a hose.

Brushing Fido daily can also help him stay cool in the summertime heat. Some pups may be more comfortable with a cool summer ‘do. This isn’t right for all our canine pals, however. Some dogs with thick fur, like huskies, have coats that actually insulate them from the heat.

We really can’t state this often enough. Never, ever leave your dog in a locked vehicle, even for just a few minutes. This can be a deadly mistake! If Fido can’t go inside with you at your destination, leave him safe and sound at home instead.
