6 Ways to Help Your Cat Live Longer

Have you ever wondered where the old myth about cats having nine lives started? We can’t say for sure, but we suspect it has something to do with Fluffy’s knack of getting herself into—and out of—mischief. Of course, our feline friends don’t actually have nine lives, any more than we do. Therefore, you’ll want to do what you can to help your pet live to a ripe old age. An East Dallas, TX vet offers some tips on how to do that below.

Good Food

A healthy diet is just as important for kitties as it is for people. Offer your feline buddy the best cat food you can afford, but don’t overindulge her. Even giving Fluffy just a few calories too many each day can cause her to pack on extra pounds. Although chubby cats are cute, they face some very serious health risks. Ask your vet for specific nutritional advice.

Keep Kitty In

One of the best things you can do to keep Fluffy safe is to make her an indoor-only pet. Outdoor cats are exposed to some very serious dangers, such as cars, weather, chemicals, predators, and other kitties. They are also much more likely to be lost, hurt, or even killed!

Petproofing

Our feline pals are very frisky and mischievous, especially when they are kittens. Make your home safe for Fluffy by securing or removing anything that could be dangerous. This includes small or sharp objects, toxic plants, chemicals, medication, and plastic bags and ties.

Comfort

Good kitty care goes beyond simply filling Fluffy’s bowl. Keep your furball content by offering her a clean litterbox, cat furniture, toys, comfy beds, and entertainment, and, of course, the occasional catnip mouse.

Veterinary Care

Proper veterinary care is very important. Many of our feline patients don’t see us as often as they should! Fluffy should be fixed, microchipped, and kept current on vaccinations, exams, and parasite control. At home, watch for signs of illness. Call your vet right away if you notice anything amiss.

Purrs

Your furry pal’s emotional and mental health will both have a huge effect on her physically. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy, and make sure she feels loved and safe!
